In June 2024, approximately 5.6 million passengers traveled through Frankfurt Airport (FRA), marking a 1.4 percent year-on-year increase. Last year’s June passenger numbers were further boosted by the different timing of the Whitsun holiday, which fell in June last year but occurred in May this year. Despite this growth, passenger traffic in June 2024 remained about 14.4 percent below pre-Covid levels in 2019.
Fraport Traffic Figures – June 2024: Frankfurt Airport Reports First-Half Passenger Growth of Seven Percent
During the first half of 2024 (January to June), FRA served a total of approximately 28.8 million passengers, representing a 7.0 percent year-on-year gain. However, passenger numbers for the first half were still 14.5 percent lower than the corresponding pre-pandemic period in 2019.
Dr. Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport AG, stated, “In the first half of the year, we increased passenger numbers by 1.8 million, welcoming about 28.8 million travelers in Frankfurt. Despite the impact of strikes earlier in the year, we remain on track to achieve our projected volume of between 61 million and 65 million passengers for the full year. However, the German aviation market’s recovery is hindered by high location-specific costs imposed by regulators. Our home market ranks last in Europe in terms of passenger recovery, necessitating fresh impetus for growth. Meanwhile, other regions, such as our Group airports in Greece, Antalya, and Lima, have already surpassed pre-crisis levels.”
Cargo traffic at Frankfurt Airport continued to grow, rising by 11.4 percent year-on-year to 178,324 metric tons in June. Aircraft movements increased by 1.5 percent, with 39,475 takeoffs and landings. Additionally, accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) rose by 2.3 percent year-on-year to approximately 2.5 million metric tons during the reporting month.
Across the Fraport Group’s international portfolio, most airports recorded passenger growth in June 2024. Notably, Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia’s capital city saw a significant 15.3 percent year-on-year increase to 148,159 passengers. In contrast, Brazilian airports Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA) experienced a combined 53.8 percent decrease in traffic due to the suspension of flight operations at POA following heavy flooding in the region. Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru surged by 16.0 percent year-on-year to around 1.9 million passengers. Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports welcomed a total of 5.3 million passengers, up 5.9 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the Bulgarian coastal airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) registered a 12.5 percent decrease to 481,635 passengers. Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera achieved an 8.6 percent gain in passenger traffic, serving approximately 4.9 million travelers in June 2024.
Overall, the airports actively managed by the Fraport Group saw a 2.2 percent year-on-year growth, handling approximately 18.9 million passengers in the reporting month.
