Ensuring Precision in Aviation—Frankfurt Airport’s Flight Inspections
From August 16 to 19, 2018, Frankfurt Airport conducted critical calibration flights to verify the accuracy of its Instrument Landing Systems (ILS). These inspections, though disruptive due to noise, are essential for maintaining the highest standards of aviation safety. Discover how these technical operations safeguard every landing.

Flight inspection at Frankfurt Airport : Noise disturbance to be expected during the day and at night
The accuracy of all instrument landing systems (ILS) for runway northwest will be inspected for both operating directions (easterly and westerly weather patterns). A twin-turboprop Beechcraft King Air 350 will be used as the calibration aircraft. During this time, noise disturbance is to be expected during the day and at night.
If the calibration flights cannot be conducted on these days, for example, due to bad weather, they will be postponed to the period from 23 to 29 August 2018.
Despite the night curfew at Frankfurt Airport, technical inspection flights, such as calibration flights, are also permitted at night, as they would have a great impact on regular air traffic during the day.
The calibration of technical facilities is indispensable for the safety of air traffic. DFS would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by such flights.
🛫 Why Calibration Flights Matter for Frankfurt Airport’s Runway Safety
During this inspection period, a Beechcraft King Air 350 aircraft was deployed to test ILS functionality on the northwest runway under varying weather conditions. These flights, permitted even during night curfews, ensure that navigation systems operate flawlessly for both easterly and westerly approaches. If weather delays occur, rescheduling is prioritized to maintain operational integrity. Though temporarily disruptive, these inspections are vital for preventing long-term risks and ensuring smooth air traffic flow.
✅ Conclusion: Flight Inspections—A Silent Guardian of Air Travel Safety
While calibration flights may cause temporary inconvenience, they play a crucial role in preserving the safety and reliability of air travel. Frankfurt Airport’s commitment to precision reflects the broader aviation industry’s dedication to excellence. DFS acknowledges the disturbance and appreciates public understanding in support of safer skies.
