The thrill of ensuring the safety of millions of flights annually awaits you. NATS, the air traffic service provider, has announced a nationwide recruitment campaign to find and train the next generation of air traffic controllers.
NATS Launches Search for Next Generation of Air Traffic Controllers
NATS manages the complex and busy UK airspace, handling approximately 2.5 million flights each year. This recruitment drive presents a unique opportunity to become a key player in maintaining the safety and efficiency of air travel. Claire Burton, Head of Operational Excellence and Transformation at NATS, highlighted the importance of this role: “Air traffic controllers are the foundation of the aviation industry, and with travel booming again, there’s never been a better time to join our teams across the country for what is a hugely fulfilling and rewarding career.”
No Specific Qualifications Needed
Candidates need not worry about having specific qualifications. All you need are five GCSEs at Grade 4 or Scottish National 5’s Grade A-C, including English and Maths. More importantly, NATS emphasizes qualities such as teamwork, situational awareness, and adaptability. Aptitude trumps academic credentials, making this an inclusive opportunity for those ready to rise to the challenge.
Comprehensive Training Program
Successful candidates will undergo around 12 months of simulator and theory-based training. Post-training, they will be posted to an airport tower or a NATS control center in Swanwick, Hampshire, or Prestwick, Ayrshire. Here, students will receive on-the-job training, working alongside experienced controllers to manage air traffic safely and efficiently. The initial salary is £21,330, with the potential for experienced controllers in busy operations to earn over £100,000.
Accredited Apprenticeship Scheme
In a bid to support aspiring controllers further, NATS now offers an accredited apprenticeship scheme. This allows trainees to work towards an L5 recognized apprenticeship qualification. Additionally, a new bursary fund has been introduced to support applicants from lower-income backgrounds or those with carer responsibilities, covering travel and medical costs.
Encouraging Diversity
NATS is committed to broadening its talent pool, particularly encouraging applications from women and ethnic minority communities. Currently, women make up about 30% of the workforce. Claire Burton remarks, “Great controllers come from all walks of life and all backgrounds. We want to attract talent from the broadest possible pool, and I’d really encourage anyone who’s keen to go for it. It really is a fantastic career.”
A Day in the Life of a Controller
The role of an air traffic controller is as dynamic as it is crucial. With around 1,600 controllers currently employed by NATS, their daily task involves managing the flow of aircraft through UK airspace and at 15 of the country’s busiest airports. Each day brings new challenges and the satisfaction of knowing you play a pivotal role in global aviation safety.
