Munich Airport has reached new heights, setting records and solidifying its position as Germany’s fastest-growing airport. With an impressive increase in passenger numbers and a flourishing route network, this Bavarian hub is soaring to new levels of success.
A Year of Unprecedented Growth
In 2024, Munich Airport welcomed 41.6 million passengers, an astounding rise of 4.5 million compared to the previous year. This double-digit growth makes it the fastest-expanding airport in Germany. Aircraft movements also climbed significantly, with an eight percent increase bringing the total to over 327,000 takeoffs and landings.
The demand for air travel remains robust, with a seat load factor of 82 percent, exceeding even the record levels set in 2023.
European and Long-Haul Flights Lead the Surge
Much of this growth is driven by increased departures across Europe and intercontinental routes. Flights to European destinations, including Mediterranean countries, saw a 12 percent rise, while long-haul flights posted an even more remarkable 17 percent growth.
This expansion highlights the growing demand for air travel and Munich Airport’s strategic importance in connecting passengers to global destinations.
Expanded Route Network and Airline Participation
Munich Airport’s route network continues to grow, now spanning 224 destinations in 66 countries. With 96 airlines operating regularly at the hub, including five dedicated cargo airlines, the airport has become a cornerstone of international connectivity.
The addition of new destinations and increased frequency of flights further enhances the airport’s appeal to both travelers and businesses.
Air Freight Sector Shows Impressive Gains
The freight sector also enjoyed substantial growth, with air freight volumes reaching 308,000 metric tons—a remarkable 11 percent increase from 2023. This underscores the airport’s role as a critical logistics hub for the region.
CEO’s Perspective on Success
Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, expressed his optimism about the results:
« I am delighted that we can report such strong growth in both passenger numbers and destinations in Munich. This confirms that there is high demand for air travel and underlines the Munich hub’s importance to the economy and population of Bavaria and far beyond. »
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future
With a record-breaking year behind it, Munich Airport shows no signs of slowing down. As it continues to expand its network and improve its services, the airport remains a vital gateway for millions of travelers and businesses worldwide.
